A show coat is the single most important item of your competition apparel. Properly fitting a women’s jacket can easily improve your equitation.
Ladies Horse show jackets are a traditionally cut men’s suit coats used in judged equestrian competitions. Based on old European jacket designs, the horse show coat had 3 front buttons a double vented back. It is tailored with a narrow waist and a bit broader in the shoulders for ease of movement. Made mostly from wools, women’s show coats are available in a range of colors. Most equitation riders show in a dark navy jacket. The idea is that all competitors will look the same. They are then judged on how well they ride.
We fit a lady’s show coat from the shoulders down. When you put on your jacket and button it, we should be able to pinch fabric at each shoulder. The outside of each shoulder of the coat should be about ½” wider than the rider. The length of the jacket is extremely important. It should just pass the bottom of your bottom. When seated in a saddle there should be 1 1/4” of extra fabric lying on the saddle.
Women’s ratcatchers are the proper shirt for horse shows and informal Fox Hunting. It is a man tailored shirt with a collar that stands up. Over that collar sits a removable collar that buttons or Velcros closed at the back of the neck. The collar is either monogrammed or you wear a pin at the front of the throat. When fitting ratcatchers correctly, riders must check to be sure the shoulder seams hit at or slightly below the outside of your shoulder. The sleeves are designed to be 2”- 4” too long so that when they are buttoned and you straighten out your arms in front of you, the back will not pull. The cuff of the Ratcatcher should be snug at your wrist. The cuff should not slide down over your hand. If the cuff is too big, move the buttons over to tighten up the fit. The tail of the riding shirt should also be long enough to tuck into your breeches. Match or color coordinate your shirt to your show jacket.
Breeches that are proper for showing your horse usually come in a limited color variety. Correct women’s horse show breech colors for hunters and equitation are usually tan, beige, gray, and occasionally rust. Dressage riders compete in white. Ariat offers many choices in breeches. Color-coordinate your breeches to your show coat. Tan breeches are best paired with navy, black, brown or green show coats. Light gray or charcoal show jackets match better with gray breeches.
Horse show gloves are sized by measuring your hand around the knuckles. The inch measurement translates to the glove size. Most women riders wear a leather glove that measures between 6” – 8 ½”. Men’s and women’s plus size gloves are sized between 8 ½” – 11”. The fingers are shorter in the overlapping sizes between ladies and men’s. They are available in half sizes in some women’s glove styles. All leather English riding gloves are sizes in full and half sizes because they will not stretch to fit a larger size. Many gloves have Lycra between the fingers and some even offer stretch material at the knuckles for comfort. These gloves are sometimes sized XXS – XXL.
Horse show boots are usually Field boots and are usually black and very tall against the back of the equestrian’s knee. The calf of the show boot is very fitted. When I measure the height for custom field boots I add an additional 1¼” inches for drop. The drop is when the boot settles at the ankle after it is broken in. The drop is very important because, when English riders are in the correct equitation position their heels are below their toes in the stirrups. By putting you heels down when riding you will pull the calf of the boot down your leg. The boot will then appear to be to short. By adding the extra height in the shaft of the riding boot it will never appear short.
Design features of field boots are ribbed soles for grip in the stirrup and so you will not slip down trailer ramps, a punched toe design to make the boot look more stylish and zippers down the back, for ease of putting on and taking off. All together a properly fitted field boot is one of the most import parts of your horse show attire.
